Learning Outcomes and Application This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to investigate requirements for sign language interpreting. It requires the ability to identify the role and boundaries of sign language interpreters, qualifications, codes of ethics and quality assurance certification which apply.Completing this unit will not provide the skills to work as an Auslan interpreter but allows those who are interested in becoming an Auslan interpreter to research requirements.No occupational licensing, certification or specific legislative requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Element: Investigate the role of a sign language interpreter.
  • Distinguish between interpreting and translating.
  • Identify different contexts in which sign language interpreting occurs.
  • Identify commonly used terminology that distinguishes sign language interpreting from spoken language interpreting.
  • Use appropriate terminology relating to languages and their transfer in interpreting.
  • Identify the role of the interpreter and appropriate behaviour and boundaries.
  • Obtain information on codes of ethics for sign language interpreters.

Assessment Tasks
